Tulong Kapatid Aids QC Waste Management Teams

Quezon City, Philippines, 7th May 2020 – Tulong Kapatid, the alliance of Foundations and companies in the MVP Group, turned over face shields, grocery packs, bread, and bottled water to various waste management providers of the local government unit of Quezon City.

Municipal waste management teams are generally made up of the city’s garbage collectors, pickers, river waste management and street sweepers, who continuously serve as frontliners for the community and for the environment.

The city government of Quezon City is the largest and most populous area in Metro Manila and has placed 34 barangays under “extreme enhanced community quarantine” due to higher risk of COVID-19 transmission. This has significantly increased generated household waste during the quarantine period since most people are staying home.

In 2019, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte signed Executive Order No. 3 which formally created the Task Force on Solid Waste Collection, Cleaning, and Disposal Services ManagementRecently,  Belmonte ordered the Task Force on Solid Waste Management (TFSWM) to mandate all city-contracted service providers to supply their waste collection personnel with the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks, face shields and hand gloves which will be part of their regular uniform. This is in anticipation of what will be the “new normal” and ensure that the risk from exposure to viral and microbial diseases can be minimized.

“We are thankful that Tulong Kapatid, through Mr. Manny Pangilinan, has considered providing for the welfare of the solid waste management team of Quezon City.” Mayor Joy Belmonte said. “Apart from the food items, these face shields would help protect our waste management operations and monitoring teams from the daily hazards of their duties. We require complete uniforms and impose penalties for non-compliance. These face shields would be used by our city government employees overseeing the waste operations, especially now that these protective items are in very high demand and our waste frontliners do not always have access to the supplies.” Belmonte added.

For this effort, around 500 Quezon City Waste Management enforcers will receive 300 face shields, and 500 food bags containing canned goods, coffee, rice, Sari Roti breads, Kopiko and bottled water. The companies and foundations that participated in the turnover were Metro Pacific Investments Foundation, One Meralco Foundation, PLDT-Smart Foundation, Maynilad and Alagang Kapatid Foundation of TV5.

The mandate for Tulong Kapatid to reach out to garbage collectors came from our Chairman, Manuel V. Pangilinan, who said not to disregard these people who are being exposed daily not only to danger such as broken glass, smoke and chemical inhalation but also to the corona virus,” says MPIFI President Melody del Rosario. “They play a vital role in our society and neglecting them could pose enormous health and environmental issues.

One Meralco Foundation president Jeffrey Tarayao said, “On a regular day we might have undermined the big benefit our basureros provide.  During this pandemic, we saw how important they are in ensuring cleanliness and sanitation in our homes and communities which are what we need to fight Covid-19. These care packages represent our gratitude and our genuine concern for them and the wellbeing of their families in the most difficult time.”

Government Relations Head of Maynilad, Anette de Ocampo also added, “The MVP Group makes sure no one is left behind. The solid waste management are our frontliners who continue to work despite the threat of Covid-19 and keeping them healthy makes us healthy too.”

As the Philippines continues to fight against this pandemic, it is important to help one another, even in the smallest ways possible. The MVP CSR group believes that the environment should not be neglected during this time. Aside from practicing social distancing and staying home, practicing proper waste segregation will help both the garbage collectors and the environment.
